Work Habits for the Information Age

CONNECTIVITY

Change is accelerating in all areas. Doctors in the future will need to develop new strategies to keep up. Accelerated personal growth will be critical. We will need to learn to grow rapidly. Future careers will demand competence, integrity, character, attitude and the ability to add value to the people or organization that is hiring you.

Concentrate on what is important. Decide what really counts. The Doctor-Patient Relationship is central.

"Things that matter most
must never be at the mercy
of things that matter least"

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Relating matters. People matter. Your patients matter. Remember the Pareto Principle-"the 80-20 rule". 80 Percent of your performance gains will come from 20 percent of your growth efforts. What should we invest in ? What few goals will make the major contribution to your personal growth? Technical skills are not enough for success. Being an expert with people is critical. Interpersonal skills are mandatory. Think about your Emotional Intelligence. The future of medicine requires cooperation. In an increasingly interconnected world, connectivity is a core competency. Personal growth will be required for success.

Medical Humor Web Sites

The current crisis in medicine can be felt not only in film but in popular humor. After decades of being held in great respect, in the 1950's there began a growing disrespect toward physicians that is reflected in popular culture. These "jokes" and cartoons certainly make clear that the public experiences modern medicine quite differently than Hippocrates' "purity and with holiness" or Maimonides' "May I never see in the patient anything but a fellow creature in pain."

However, humor also suggests the types of changes patients would like to expect. Patients want a humanistic medicine. They want to be known as individual people, not just an illness. They want their physicians to to listen and to care. They agree with what Hippocrates wrote 2500 years ago: " where there is love of man, there is also love of the art." As you read the humor on the sites below, I encourage you to search for the messages presented.
